Book Review – Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

I’m extremely behind on writing reviews for the things I’ve read in December, so here’s a mini-review for a cute Middle Grade Graphic Novel. I started reading it in French while at work (at a French Immersion school), then continued it at home (my daughter has a copy in English).

About The Book 📚

Publication Date: Sept 2016

Publisher: Graphix

Suggested Reader Age: 8+

Genre: Middle Grade Graphic Novel, Fantasy (paranormal)

My Review

› Catrina‘s family move to Bahía de la Luna, Mexico because the weather will help her sister Maya who has cystic fibrosis. Catrina makes new friends who teach her about the ghosts that live here. Maya wants to meet a ghost, but Catrina is afraid of them. As Día de Muertos approaches, Catrina must learn to face her fears in order for Maya to be able to get her wish.

› Ghosts reminded me of Coco. This is a heart-warming story of sisterly love, and it is sad but also hopeful. I do have a couple issues regarding missions and Mexican history…from what I’ve read and learned elsewhere, Ghosts doesn’t accurately portray Día de Muertos or indigenous history.

 › Final Thoughts
Ghosts is a moving story about sibling connection that would be great for reluctant readers and fans of Coco.
